What To Do About Cockroaches In Yakima County Homes

When residents of Yakima County start to notice signs of a cockroach infestation, or they actually start seeing roaches in their homes, their responses vary greatly. Some people don't like roaches, but they put up with them. Some people loath roaches, and they can't stand the thought of a single roach in the house. And, of course, there is everyone in between.

While we certainly don't believe that you should live in fear of cockroaches, it is wise to have a healthy respect for the impact these dirty insects can have on your health and the health of everyone living in your home. Join us as we take a look at common Yakima County cockroaches, what the cockroaches in our area do when they get inside, where cockroaches live, and what works best to get rid of cockroaches.

If you have a cockroach infestation and you need immediate assistance, you can use our contact page to connect with us. We offer industry-leading pest control in Yakima County. With that said, let's take a look at the types of roaches in our area and the problems roaches present.

Types Of Cockroaches That Invade Yakima County

We have three common cockroach pests in our area and several others that occasionally present a problem. The common roaches are German cockroaches, American cockroaches, and Oriental cockroaches.

Not So Good

Oriental cockroaches require high levels of moisture or humidity. This can keep them from staying inside your home. These roaches are typically black.

Bad

American cockroaches desire high levels of moisture but can readily infest a home under certain conditions. These are large, chestnut brown roaches with a yellow figure 8 on the back.

Worst

German cockroaches can live in low moisture conditions and are the most common structure-infesting pests in the world. They are tan roaches with two dark lines on the back. Nymphs can be entirely black.

It is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between the cockroach species we have in Yakima County, particularly if they're nymphs. If you need assistance with cockroach identification, feel free to reach out to us here at Prosite. We can have one of our on-staff experts take a look.

Why Cockroaches Are Not Good

We don't have to tell you that roaches are dirty insects. It is common knowledge. If you find a cockroach in your house, there are a few things you can immediately know for sure, such as:

  • These insects will spread bacterial illness by contaminating foods, surfaces, dishes, and other items.
  • Cockroaches feed on cardboard, paper, fabrics, and other items with cellulose. They can be as destructive as silverfish or carpet beetles if given ideal conditions.
  • They're going to shed their skins and leave waste in the areas they infest. These produce airborne allergens that cause asthma symptoms to flare.

No two roach infestations are the same. Some are mild. Some are severe. We can't tell you how roaches will impact your health or how much damage they'll cause to your property, only that it is best to get rid of cockroaches if you find a cockroach in your house or if you detect signs of cockroach activity.

Where Cockroaches Come From

There are two ways cockroaches can get into your home. They can come in from the outside or they can hitch a ride in a piece of furniture. If they're coming from the outside, you can use natural pest control methods to stop them.

How To Get Rid Of Cockroaches Naturally

There are many ways to naturally control cockroaches. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Keep all garbage in sealed containers.
  • Clean gutters to prevent ground saturation near your home. Roaches are drawn to damp habitats.
  • Thin out dense areas in your landscaping. Heavy vegetation traps moisture.
  • Remove leaves and other organic clutter. These trap moisture and attract roaches.
  • If you have a dog, make sure to stay on top of waste clean-up. Cockroaches feed on waste.
  • Use a caulking gun to seal gaps, cracks, or holes in your exterior.
  • Make sure your weatherstipping, door sweeps, and screens are working.

When you consider food, water, and harborage options that roaches need for successful habitation, you can deter them.

How To Handle A Cockroach Infestation

When Yakima County residents discover cockroaches, they often turn to store-bought cockroach control products. While these products can work to arrest an infestation, they're difficult to apply. The best way to deal with a cockroach infestation is to let a trained and experienced residential pest control professional apply cockroach control products.

A professional has specialized knowledge and can properly select and administer the correct products in an effective way. They will also use a strategy that includes inspection, treatments, monitoring, evaluations, and follow-ups. When your treatment plan is concluded, you won't have to wonder if there are still cockroaches in your home.

If you live in Yakima County and you need a cockroach treatment or assistance with cockroach identification, reach out to Prosite. We can help you find the answers and solutions you're looking for.
